In the last eight years at the end of April, we’ve celebrated the Great British Beef Week (GBBW) to highlight the importance of beef in our diet. Apart from being an extremely delicious week, the campaign also aims to raise awareness of the quality and standards of the British beef. Farmers from all around the country would gather at their food fairs to honour local produce. It sounds like a fantastic way to spend a week if you are a farmer.
Fortunately for all of us non-farmers the Beef Week is not a strictly members-only party. The whole point of the GBBW is to teach people about this high-protein meat full of vitamins, minerals and iron. So if we are not there to taste it how would we spread the word about all the good stuff in it? Here are a few suggestions of where you can taste some local beef at our Food Trucks in April:
Growlers - www.growlerslondon.co.uk
It doesn’t get much beefier than Growlers… Their motto is Eat Like An Animal. Their food is inspired by an old butchers’ technique called prego (Portuguese for nail) which consist of leftover cuts of meat being hammered until they are super-tender. Then the meat would be cooked in butter and garlic and laid on top of some crusty bread. I don’t speak Portuguese but they have totally nailed it. Their pregos are made from free-range Bavette Steak is sourced by independent farmers in Scotland. Their buns are hand-baked at a Portuguese bakery just for the Growlers. Taste The Original which has the simplest ingredients but the best taste – Bavette Steak, fresh mayo, Dijon mustard and seasonal pickle. But if you do want to spice-it-up The Chilli Cheese with its fermented chilli and ginger sauce is definitely a solution. Of course, there is Bavette Steak in this one as well.

Kalimera www.kalimera-streetfood.co.uk
Say Kalimera (hello) to this Greek food truck who’s here to dip your soul in tzatziki and put your mind at peace. You can start with a beef salad and then if you are feeling exotic try the beef and olive mince wrap stuffed in a wholemeal pitta topped with parsley hummus and surprise, surprise – tzatziki! But if you are in the minority who don’t like tzatziki you can have a more traditional beefy meal – a mousaka, prepared with aubergine, potatoes and kefalotyri cheese.

Top that with their Almost Famous burger sauce and voila! If this, however, is not beefy enough the go to the Big Wonder – all of the above but it triple size with crispy bacon and Baconnaise.

It is the Great British beef week but why not try locally produced meat with some South African recipes? Cape Lekker is a successful 13-year-old food vendor. They even have their own bouncy castle, although that’s only when you hire is private. For something more authentic try the Boerewors these are traditional South African beef sausages which contain 90% meat. There’s also some more exotic stuff like zebra, ostrich and kangaroo if you are feeling adventurous.
Despite the bouncy castle, Cape Lekker don’t play around as they have an award-winning chef on board to ensure the best food quality.
